Südtirol Ultrarace
Extreme running race along the high mountain trail

Most prestigious distance changed for the 10th Südtirol Ultrarace

Sarentino, 6 July 2023 - Just six weeks to go: On Saturday 26 August, hundreds of trail runners from all over the world will once again set off on a magical journey of discovery in the heart of the Sarntal Alps. Preparations for the big anniversary edition are in full swing.

At the tenth edition of the extreme mountain run along the horseshoe shaped Hufeisen tour in the Sarentino Alps, all participants can choose between three different routes with varying lengths and degrees of difficulty. After original 119 km original route almost 7900 meters of ascent had to be cancelled for organisational reasons, the wheat will now be separated from the chaff on the newly marked 63 km route with 3550 metres of ascent.

On Saturday, 26 August, the starting signal will sound at 6:30 hrs and the runners will set off from the Bolzano basin. The route then climbs a challenging elevation gain of 2,000 metres to Corno del Renon, continues to Forcella di Sarentino and down to Stöfflhütte, before again passing Croce di Lazfons and descending towards the finish in Sarentino. This last section is new, because the route now runs across Getrum Alm, continues on wide forest paths below Monte Villandro to Castel Regino and for the last kilometres into the main town of Sarentino, where the finishers are welcomed by the enthusiastic public.

Marathon fans and first time trail runners - there is something for every taste

“We naturally very much regret the cancellation of the 119 km race, but unfortunately we are still feeling the after-effects of the Covid pandemic here this year. Registrations are way below pre-Covid levels, so we had to pull the plug. We are a voluntary association that has to cover its costs. Registration levels so far make this impossible and unfortunately the trend was not pointing upwards either. We are confident, however, that we will be able to offer the 119 km again next year," the organisers stated.

In addition to the Südtirol Ultrarace 63K, which is this year's top distance at the Südtirol Ultrarace, there will also be the 45 kilometres marathon distance with 2750 metres of ascent. For trail beginners, on the other hand, the Südtirol Ultrarace 28K with 1880 metres elevation gain is just right. These two routes also begin with the starting signal at Piazza Walther in Bolzano, the finish is in Sarentino.

Registrations for all three distances of the Sarentino trail event remain open at  www.ultrarace.it.
